Equestrio Celebrates Global Art at East Hampton’s Baker House 1650

A historic Carriage House dating back to 1883 was the perfect setting for a Hamptons summer soiree with Equestrio.  Antonella Bertello, owner of the The Baker House 1650 in East Hampton, NY hosted guests at her stunning inn to celebrate artist Mike Arnold and his exhibit “Polo: The Dance of Pony and Player.”  Glasses of Champagne Billecart-Salmon, compelling conversation, and artistic appreciation abounded on the magical midsummer evening where guests gathered from around the globe.

For anyone looking for an oasis to stay in the Hamptons, the inn has a main house with pool and wisteria-covered pergola as well as a spa with indoor pool, sauna, and Jacuzzi. In the back of the property, the impeccably restored Carriage House has guest rooms and its own private pool and patio, original details such as the barn doors, iron spiral staircase, hay doors, and slate and wooden floors intact.  It’s the perfect place for luxury and privacy to stay during the Hampton Classic or vacation time year-round.

Featured artist Mike Arnold and his wife Lauren traveled from Dubai where he has had an established architectural career which has evolved into art.  “Living and working in the Middle East has exposed me to the region’s inspiring admiration and love for horses and the venues where both horse and rider interact and compete,” he explains.  Many of his works capture horses racing in the prestigious Dubai World Cup. The process is a mono-print technique which is a combination and interaction of layers of pencil drawing over oil paper, over an oil painted foil on glass – an interesting interplay between positive and negative space.

“In my horse work I’m capturing a moment of energy – a sense of where they’re coming from and where they’re going as well as what’s happening in the moment.”

While growing up in a city Arnold mostly knew horses from art work.  “I grew up in the galleries seeing horses in battle. I was always intrigued with horses – and now I live in Dubai and they worship their horses.”

The Hamptons also is a horse lover haven dotted with gorgeous horse farms and barns and is home to many riders as well as celebrities like Madonna and Matt Lauer who own farms.   All eyes will be focused here during the Hampton Classic which runs from August 28 – Sept. 4th.

Mike Arnold’s exhibit at the Baker House 1650 Carriage House continues through mid-November.
