Britain’s Young Show Jumping Star

Discipline : Jumping

Nation : British

Date of Birth : 9th April 1996

At the age of 20, Jessica Mendoza is a fierce competitor in the *5 grand prix yet full of poise and grace. She’s one of youngest riders to represent Great Britain at the top level in Nations’ Cup and European Show Jumping Championships, and was a reserve on their team at the Rio 2016 Olympics. “Being selected for the Olympics was an amazing experience,” she said, “Even though I didn’t jump there, I loved being a part of the team for five months.” Coming up the ranks also means looking at sport as business. She says, “I’m prepping myself to get good sponsors and encourage owners so I can build my career.” The Brit lives in the Netherlands to be close to the European circuit but will be in Wellington, Florida this winter. We caught up with Mendoza at the Longines Masters of Paris where she was competing with Wan Architect who she calls “super cute with his big fringe and personality,” and her new mount of three weeks Horst van de Mispelaere. “This is one of my favorite shows. The jumping is great and then you have the lifestyle -the beautiful VIP area and the evenings.” And for sure Mendoza knows how to not only dominate the show ring but rock the red carpet.

Do you have any good luck rituals?

I have lucky jodhpurs. I wear a certain pair on grand prix days. They fit the nicest so I feel like if I look the best I’m going to do the best. I also carry a lucky whip called Mr. Flappy.

What career would you chose if you weren’t riding?

The arts. I did art for my A levels at school. I paint and I really enjoy it, creating oil paintings of quirky sorts of animals. It’s a mix between realistic and abstract.

Who’s your favorite Royal?

Who are you following on Instagram?

Kylie Jenner or any of the Kardashians. I also like the funny ones that do memes and quotes. I like to laugh – that’s how I use my Instagram.

What do you enjoy when you’re not riding?

Sleep! I have to have a nap every day, and if I don’t I’m grumpy.
